Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Survey with Commercial-Grade Instruments: A Case Study from the Eastern Ḫabur Archaeological Survey, Iraq

2018

Low-altitude photography in archaeology is now common practice at the scale of excavations; however, landscape-scale applications are a relatively new endeavor with promising analytical potential. From 2014–2016, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a mounted camera was used to document sites recorded as part of the Eastern Ḫabur Archaeological Survey (EḪAS), an archaeological reconnaissance project in western Dohuk Province, Iraqi Kurdistan. The EḪAS team documented over 70 archaeological sites with the UAV, from single-phase artifact scatters, to archaeological remains with standing architecture, to tells that cover more than 30 hectares. Representative examples from this survey are pres…

Integrated use of unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning to support archaeological analysis: The Acropolis of Selinunt…

2021

Southwestern Sicily is an area of infrequent seismic activity; however, some studies carried out in the archaeological Selinunte site suggest that, between the fourth century BC and the early Middle Ages, probably at least two earthquakes strucked this area with enough energy to damage and cause the collapse and kinematics of much of the architecture of Selinunte. Take into account that, in 2008, a noninvasive archaeological prospection and traditional data gathering methods along the Acropolis north fortifications were carried out. Following these first studies, after about 10 years, a new geophysical campaign was carried out. This second campaign benefited from the application of modern t…

Selinunt, Sizilien. Forschungen in Selinunt, Teil 1. Ein neues Modell für die Stadt Selinunt. Die Feldarbeiten des Jahres 2021

2022

Since 2021, the German Research Foundation has been funding a new interdisciplinary field project to investigate the urban fabric of the Greek colony of Selinous in a spatially comprehensive and diachronic perspective. The project aims at extending the existing model of the ideal Greek city by considering also the historically conditioned fractures in the urban development and the multiple transformations of the living space between the 7th and 3rd century BCE. This is to be pursued by large scale archaeological, geophysical and geoarchaeological prospections, small excavations in selected areas and the thorough study of the finds and archaeobiological remains. This is a report about the fi…

LiDAR-derived DTM for historical landscape evaluation: the case study of the “Harvesting Memories” project (Castro Valley and Mt. Barraù, Corleone – …

2016

The project “Harvesting Memories” is focused on the analysis of the long-term transformation of the cultural landscape in a rural area of Central-Western Sicily (Castro Valley and Mt. Barraù, Corleone – Palermo). In order to quickly outline the history of the territory with an acceptable precision, our survey aimed at covering and sampling as much surface as possible, according to time and human resources available. To reach this goal, in the research design we opted for qualitative surveys. The choice of the fields to be surveyed was based on GIS analysis — our predictive model took in consideration slope, water sources and presence of points with high visibility in the landscape —, that h…

2014

This paper describes the results of a landscape archaeological research, focused on the ancient territory of Alesa, city of Hellenistic and Roman period located near the North coast of Sicily. The aim of the research is to analyze the problems of settlement and rural population of Alesa hinterland, and also to detect human activities and to perceive settlement strategies and resource exploitation tactics by the local communities in a long-term perspective (from prehistory to late-roman/early byzantine periods). The archaeological survey, based on an intensive archaeological exploration (the sampled area is wide about 20 Kmq), has allowed both the reconstruction of rural settlement of Alesa …

Contatti culturali, identità e popolamento nel territorio imerese

2016

Settore L-ANT/09 - Topografia AnticaSettore L-ANT/07 - Archeologia ClassicaThis work focuses on the problem of cultural contacts between Greek colonists and indigenous communities in the territory of Himera based on the results of the archaeological survey conducted for three decades in the valleys of the northern Imera Torto and S. Leonardo rivers. The elements of material culture that enable us to define the ways of cultural interaction between settlers and indigenous peoples as well as to reconstruct the political socio-economic and sacred landscapes in the various districts investigated are examined. In fact the research allows to outline in addition to the usual settlement and agricultural organizations of chora politiké and éremos chora articulated areas within the territory of Himera and to understand the landmarks of the rural settlement alongside the presence of highland settlements . Therefore the center-periphery approach is abandoned for a more articulated analysis demonstrating different forms of settlement and cultural contact in the three river valleys of the Himera hinterland.
